Taekwondo Promotion Test Requirements

Promotion to High White Belt

 

Student is responsible for ALL prior belt requirements. 3 stripes are required to be eligible for next rank.

1st Stripe
Kicks: front kick, roundhouse
Combination: front kick, front kick, roundhouse 
Board Breaks (hand / foot): punch / front kick
2nd Stripe
Forms: white form 1 & 2
Body shield sparring
3rd Stripe
Practical Self Defense: 
Other: 10 push ups and sit ups
Yellow belts must purchase sparring gear! (15 & older are required once they earn high white belt)

 

Promotion to Yellow Belt


1st Stripe
Kicks: side kick, drop kick
Combination: roundhouse, roundhouse, side kick
Board Breaks (hand / foot): knife hand / roundhouse
2nd Stripe
Forms: White Belt Form
Sparring: Promise Sparring (under 15) light contact sparring (15 up)
Other: Tenets of Taekwondo
3rd Stripe
Practical Self Defense: 
Other: 10 push ups and sit ups


 

Promotion to High Yellow Belt

1st Stripe
Kicks: Turning Back Kick, Fast step Roundhouse, Fast Step Front
Combination: Fast Step Roundhouse, Drop Kick, Turning Back Kick
Board Breaks (hand / foot): palm attack / axe kick or side kick
2nd Stripe
Forms:  Taegeuk 1 (il jang) 
Sparring: Must demonstrate reasonable sparring skills for this level
Other: Student crees
3rd Stripe
Practical Self Defense:
Other: 20 push ups and sit ups
Student is responsible for ALL prior belt requirements. 3 stripes are required to be eligible for next rank.

 

Promotion to Green Belt


1st Stripe
Kicks: Fast Step Side kick, Fast Step Drop Kick
Combination: 
Board Breaks (hand / foot): elbow (down or in) / Turning Back Kick
2nd Stripe
Forms:  Taegeuk 2 (ee jang)
Sparring: Must demonstrate reasonable sparring skills for this level
3rd Stripe
Practical Self Defense: 
Other: 20 push ups and sit ups
Student is responsible for ALL prior belt requirements. 3 stripes are required to be eligible for next rank.

 

Promotion to High Green Belt

1st Stripe
Kicks: Whip Kick, Turning Whip Kick
Combination: Shuffle Back roundhouse, turning whip kick
Board Breaks (hand / foot): punch or elbow / Whip Kick
2nd Stripe
Forms: Taegeuk 3 (sam jang) 
Sparring: Must demonstrate reasonable sparring skills for this level
3rd Stripe
Practical Self Defense:
Other: 30 push ups and sit ups

Student is responsible for ALL prior belt requirements. 3 stripes are required to be eligible for next rank.

 

Promotion to Blue Belt


1st Stripe
Kicks: Fast Step Whip Kick
Board Breaks (hand / foot): Choose your own hand technique / Turning Whip Kick
2nd Stripe
Forms:Taegeuk 4 (sa jang)
Sparring: Must demonstrate reasonable sparring skills for this level
3rd Stripe
Practical Self Defense:
Other: 30 push ups and sit ups

Student is responsible for ALL prior belt requirements. 3 stripes are required to be eligible for next rank.

 

Promotion to High Blue Belt

 

1st Stripe
Kicks: Tornado Roundhouse, Double roundhouse
Board Breaks (hand / foot): Choose your own hand technique / Fast Step Whip Kick

2nd Stripe
Forms: Taegeuk 5 (oh jang)

Sparring: Must demonstrate reasonable sparring skills for this level
3rd Stripe
Practical Self Defense: 
Other: 40 push ups and sit ups

Student is responsible for ALL prior belt requirements. 3 stripes are required to be eligible for next rank.

 

Promotion to Red Belt


1st Stripe
Kicks: Flying Side Kick
Board Breaks (hand / foot): Choose your own hand technique / Tornado Roundhouse
2nd Stripe
Forms: Taegeuk 6 (Yuk jang)

Sparring: Must demonstrate reasonable sparring skills for this level
3rd Stripe
Practical Self Defense:
Other: 40 push ups and sit ups

Student is responsible for ALL prior belt requirements. 3 stripes are required to be eligible for next rank.

 

Promotion to High Red Belt


1st Stripe
Kicks: Jump Turning Back Kick
Board Breaks (hand / foot): Make Hand Breaking Combitaion / Flying Side Kick
2nd Stripe
Forms: Taegeuk 7 (Chil jang)

Sparring: Must demonstrate reasonable sparring skills for this level

3rd Stripe

Practical Self Defense:
Other: 40 push ups and sit ups


Student is responsible for ALL prior belt requirements. 3 stripes are required to be eligible for next rank.

 

Promotion to 1st Degree Black Belt Tae Kwon Do


1st Stripe
Kicks: Jump Turning Whip Kick

Breaking: Any technique requested by instructor, 10 techniques (5 hand , 5 foot), 1 cinder slab (?slab for women) or 2 boards

2nd Stripe
Forms: Taegeuk 8 (Pal jang)
Sparring: 9 - 1?minute rounds, 1 - two minute round (2 on 1)

3rd Stripe
50 push ups, 50 sit ups /
The following will be expected on the day of the test:
Practical Self Defense: 3 minutes of “shark bait?(continuous attacks)


Promotion to 2nd Degree Black Belt Tae Kwon Do


Forms: Keumgang and Knife Form
Practical Self Defense: 3 minutes of “shark bait?(continuous attacks), 20 point blocking, Street to Ground 1-8
Breaking: 10 techniques (5 hand , 5 foot), 2 cinder slab (1 slab for women) or 3 boards (2 boards for women)
Sparring: 7 - 1?minute rounds, 1 - two minute round (2 on 1)
Tournament: Must have competed or judged in 2 tournaments since 1st Dan
Other: Must be a judge in at least 1 tournament or compete in 2 tournaments since last exam.


Promotion to 3rd Degree Black Belt Tae Kwon Do


Forms: Taebaek, Palgwe 1-4, Breaking form
Practical Self Defense: 3 minutes of “shark bait?(continuous attacks), combat kata 1-30
Breaking: 10 techniques (5 hand , 5 foot), 2 cinder slab (1 slab for women) or 3 boards (2 boards for women)
Sparring: 5 - 1?minute rounds, 1 - two minute round (2 on 1)
Tournament: Must have competed or judged in 2 tournaments since last promotion
Other: Start your own club OR 100 hours of training experience outside our school.


Promotion to Black Belt - 4th Degree Black Belt Tae Kwon Do


Forms: Pyongwon and Palgwe 5-8
Practical Self Defense: 3 minutes of “shark bait?(continuous attacks)
Breaking: 10 techniques (5 hand , 5 foot), 3 cinder slab (2 slab for women) or 4 boards (3 boards for women)
Sparring: 5 - 1 ?minute rounds, 1 - two minute round (2 on 1), 2 rounds of ground fighting
Other: 3 page written essay on history of Taekwondo, 300 hours of teaching since last promotion.


Promotion to Black Belt - 5th Degree Black Belt Tae Kwon Do


Forms: Sipjin and 1 weapon form of choice
Practical Self Defense: 3 minutes of “shark bait?(continuous attacks)
Breaking: 10 techniques (5 hand , 5 foot), 4 cinder slab (3 slab for women) or 5 boards (3 boards for women)
Sparring: 5 - 1 ?minute rounds, 1 - two minute round (2 on 1), 1 rounds of ground fighting
Other: 10 page written essay on history and practice of Taekwondo, general knowledge of ground, close quarter and punching/kicking ranges,
600 hours of teaching since last promotion.
